April 5.

Bright as a bridegroom
the bluebird now comes to us
in his vernal dress.

These truly warm days
just so simple every year —
butterflies and frogs.
April 5, 1854


A sober moist day
with a circle round the sun,
seen in reflection.

The first sight of the
blue water in the spring is
exhilarating.
April 5, 1856



This early blossom
bright and rare amid the leaves,
like the butterflies.
